Multi academy trust Wellspring has been chosen to open three new Free Schools in a move that will significantly improve special needs provision for children across Sheffield, North Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
The three new schools, which will begin opening from September 2022, take the number of schools operated by Wellspring to 28, making the trust one of the largest in the North.
Mark Wilson, CEO of Wellspring Academy Trust, said: “The fact that the Department for Education has granted Wellspring approval to deliver these three new schools is testament to the trust’s extensive experience and proven ability in creating positive, nurturing and effective learning environments in this sector. Special needs school places are in increasing demand and we are proud to be able to play our part in meeting some of that growing need. Our three new schools will ensure that more children can access the high-quality specialist education they need to thrive and will improve the long-term life chances of some of our most vulnerable young people.
“Creating three brand new schools from scratch is no small task but the team at Wellspring has an excellent track record, with eight successful new school builds, including five Free Schools, completed to date. Having the opportunity to develop purpose-built schools specifically designed to support the particular needs of the pupils is great for Wellspring and will be fantastic for the children who will be able to attend and their families.”
Nationwide, the government has approved 37 new special and alternative provision schools, providing more than 3,000 extra places.
Education secretary Gavin Williamson said: “We need to make sure we are putting our most disadvantaged and vulnerable children first, including those with complex needs”.
“These new schools, adding to the network of excellent free schools around the country, will help level up opportunities for children from all backgrounds so they can receive a world-class education.”
