Nev Wilkinson Crowned a Finalist in National Teaching Awards

The inspirational North East Lincolnshire Headteacher, Neville Wilkinson, has been nominated for the highest honour at the ‘Oscars of education’. Nev, Principal of Littlecoates Primary Academy, has been recognised for his exceptional contributions to education through commendation at the TES Schools Awards.

Since taking the helm at Littlecoates in 2018, Nev has been an unrelenting advocate for the under-served community of West Marsh. His acute understanding of the challenges faced by families in the area and tireless work, provides the children with the best possible education and start in life.  Nev works closely with local organisations, families, and other leaders to strengthen ties and create opportunities that benefit everyone.  His dedication has transformed the school into a hub of hope and progress for the entire community.

Nev has implemented numerous initiatives to ensure that every child feels safe, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.  Whether it’s securing funding for additional resources, setting up breakfast clubs, or personally checking in on students who require extra support, Nev leads with his heart and his actions speak volumes.

With an impact felt far beyond the classroom, Nev has implemented initiatives like the ‘Littlecoates Larder’ and ‘Littlecoates Lounge’ which are open to everyone in the local community.  The Larder, a food bank initiative pioneered by Nev, experiences a staggering uptake and is often subject to snaking queues. Despite being happy to fund the project, Nev found the community wishing to contribute; now operated on the principle of ‘take what you need, pay what you can’ all proceeds raised are reinvested into both the Larder and The Lounge.  The Lounge supports adults and offers Woodland Mother and Baby Groups; classes in conjunction with the local sixth form college and ‘Green Fingers’ gardening sessions designed to support wellbeing and mental health.

When asked about the honour, Nev stated, ‘It is a privilege to serve the West Marsh community of Grimsby and, with my colleagues, do the very best we can for our children and families. We think of ourselves as the small school with a big heart. I am delighted to be nominated for this award on behalf of everyone who contributes to making Littlecoates a truly wonderful, community school.’

Mark Wilson, CEO of Wellspring Academy Trust added, ‘We are incredibly proud to see Nev recognised as a finalist in the National Teaching Awards. His exceptional leadership, ambitious vision, and unwavering dedication have been pivotal in revolutionising the educational opportunities for young people in West Marsh.  It is a privilege to have Nev as a leader within our Trust community and to work alongside a committed group of professionals who all strive to provide an outstanding education for our students.  This achievement is a clear reflection of his profound impact and passion for transforming lives through learning.’

Whilst the community of West Marsh may experience socio-economic pressures, Nev refuses to allow this to limit his aspirations for his young people.  Students leave Littlecoates ready to embark on bright futures and Nev’s ability to lead with kindness; gain the respect of all who meet him and create meaningful change, make him extraordinary and more than deserving of this accolade.
