Wellspring Executive Shortlisted for CFO of the Year

Mark Wood, Chief Finance Officer of Wellspring Academy Trust, has been recognised for his exceptional contributions to education through a nomination for the prestigious CFO of the Year award.

At Wellspring, Mark has spent eight years astutely leading the academy trust’s robust financial management.  As one of only five nominees nationwide for the MAT Excellence Awards, judges recognised Mark for his exemplary leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to excellence.  His efforts have not only strengthened the Trust’s financial position but have guaranteed world-class educational opportunities for young people across the North of England.

Mark joined the Trust in April 2017 when it comprised of thirteen academies and held reserves of £1.9m.  Today, we boast a thriving community of 33 Academies, backed by £13.3m in reserves.  His strategic financial leadership was instrumental in the Trust’s remarkable growth.  Mark developed and executed a robust financial plan, ensuring financial stability and resilience amidst economic challenges.

Under his guidance, the finance department has become a model of innovation and efficiency. He has implemented cutting-edge technologies, streamlining operations and enhancing financial reporting.  Mark has worked tirelessly to secure funding for critical programmes that enrich student experiences, including the innovative £12m Trent View College in Scunthorpe and £45m Springwell Leeds Academies. Ensuring sound management of public resources and sustained fiscal health, Mark achieved the  rarely awarded accolade of ‘Substantial Assurance’ at the Annual Audit.  He has enabled strategic investments in environments, transforming schools that converted with significant deficits.
